Glasshouse Christian College
Tomkins worked with Glasshouse Christian College on the construction of three new general learning areas (GLAs), a large outdoor learning area, amenities and a large staff room with internal kitchen and meeting rooms, all adjoining to the existing school.
Exposed honed concrete external bench seats are a real feature, with internal finishes including operable walls, perforated plasterboard raking ceilings, suspended LED lighting, planked carpet tiles and sheet vinyl. External works consisted of 87 asphalt car parks with both light-duty and heavy-duty pavement and access roads for drop-off, pick-up, and bus lanes. Stormwater is treated through a bio basin and open swale.
We worked within an environmentally sensitive area with natural creek and overland flow and tree protection zones. Located in a natural bush setting, the site has been heavily landscaped with dry creek beds and feature boulders and on-site established native grass trees were transplanted within the landscape areas. As the site was heavily vegetated we had to undertake selective land clearing which was managed to ensure no damage to wildlife. We set out the minimal amount of clearing required and engaged services of professional wildlife spotters and catchers to ensure that no wildlife was injured during these activities. Having extensive experience in the education sector, Tomkins was well-placed to manage a construction site in a live environment. We ensured public safety by daily checks of our perimeter fencing, and had ongoing communications with facilities management to ensure we were not disrupting the school.
